Beyond These Walls
PCC's Giving Campaign for 2019-2024
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. - Acts 1:8
This giving campaign is not about a building. Instead, it’s about God and what He wants to do in and through His people here in this local church. It’s about the wonderful and God glorifying ministry that He has given us the privilege to be a part of and that this building facilitates. We want to see that amazing ministry continue and expand.
We want to see it expand beyond these walls into our hearts, into our community and into the world.

Into Our Hearts
We want everything we do here in this building to lead towards true heart transformation. The worship, teaching, prayer and fellowship that happens in this place is not meant to go only skin deep. Instead, it is meant to sink in and genuinely change us so that our worship is not just something that happens here on Sunday mornings but is something that happens in our work, play and rest throughout the week. This building is a tool that God has given us to help transform and shape hearts for His glory and for our good.
In God’s Word, we are commanded to love God with all of our heart (Matthew 22:37). We also see Jesus rebuke the religious elite of his day by quoting from the prophet Isaiah, saying, “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me…” (Matthew 15:8). We therefore want to be a people who genuinely worship God from the heart.
This building is a tool that helps make that possible. In our safe, secure and child friendly KidzMin rooms, children’s hearts and minds are shaped as they grasp fundamental truths about who our God is for the first time. In a comfortable and youthful space in Room 208, teens in our Student Ministries explore important questions about what it means to make their faith their own. College students and other adults learn how to better understand and apply God’s Word to their lives in bright and well-equipped classrooms. The living and life transforming Word of God is proclaimed and sung every Sunday morning as we meet together in our gathered worship space. Individuals and families, young and old, draw near to God together as Home Groups and Bible studies meet in the building each week.
Again, this campaign is not about a building. Instead, it’s about the heart transforming ministry that this building helps make possible.

Into Our Community
We want this building and all the ministries associated with it to be a blessing to our local community. When King Solomon dedicated the Temple in 1 Kings 8, he prayed that it would be a house of prayer for all nations. The Temple was designed to be a blessing not just to the Israelites but also to their neighbors and those who were passing through. Similarly, we want this building and the ministry it supports to be a blessing to our neighbors as well.
We do this by opening our doors and inviting the community in through local evangelism and outreach efforts including SportsWorld and SportsWorld Jr, two extremely well-attended summer camp programs run by Student Ministries and KidzMin, where children have a blast and learn about the love of Jesus. We also do this through Summit Christian Academy, a K4-12 classical Christian school that partners with families from over 55 different church fellowships in Hampton Roads. Summit is a ministry of our church and our building serves as their upper school campus, which serves more than 40% of their student body. Over 60 local women of various ages, backgrounds, and faiths are served through our Mom2Mom ministry. Our College Ministry is increasingly building bridges with students and ministries on nearby campuses and welcoming them to our church. We have also opened our doors in order to support and bless local ministries and organizations like CRU, InterVarsity, Red Cross, Tabb HS Jr ROTC, support groups and scout troops.
Our building and the people who worship here also serve as a resource to ministries that are going out into the community in order to bless our neighbors. Friends of Refugees is a ministry of our church that equips and sends out people to serve local refugees through friendship and practical assistance. Serve the City Peninsula is an organization that we partner with that works toward community transformation by connecting individuals and organizations together in local volunteer service. Newsome-Bailey Project is another such organization that we have the privilege of supporting. They are a holistic intervention program that helps at-risk elementary school students in Southeast Newport News to succeed academically.
Through these various ministries and partnerships, God is continuing to expand the ministry that happens here in this building beyond these walls and into our local community.

Into The World
We want this building to be a launching pad for global ministry that will spread the good news of Jesus to every corner of the earth. We desire this because that is what the church is meant to be. In some of the final words of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus charged his followers to go and make disciples of all nations. In Acts 1:8 he told them that they would be his witnesses in Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. This global mission to make disciples of all nations is a task that God has charged the church to complete. He will do it and He has told us that he will do it through us.
And here at Peninsula Community Chapel, God has given us this building in order to help us be faithful in spreading His good news across the globe. We currently have 49 Global Ministry Partners who are engaged in strategic gospel ministry in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania. Most of these partners are people whom we have sent to the field from our own church body. We have also adopted three unreached people groups. They include one in Central Asia, another in East Asia, and the Aweer of coastal Kenya. This means that we zealously pray for God to build his church among these people groups and we direct strategic support to Gospel ministry going on among them.
Our building serves as a great tool to help us do this. This space is used to help us educate and mobilize men, women, youth and children for God’s global mission through Global Ministry Conferences, seminars, prayer times, hosting Perspectives courses, as well as luncheons with global ministry partners and short-term teams that have just returned from the field.
We want to see the amazing things that God is already doing continue to expand beyond these walls and into the world.

Where Have We Been?
1983/1986The Chapel begins having services at the Holiday Inn in N.News becoming an established independent church. Three years later, we move to the Ramada Inn on Rt. 17, meet in a banquet room or the Inn Place bar, with baptisms in the hot tub. The core group solidifies and experiences growth.
|
1989The Chapel moves into rented commercial space located in Warwick Center. The space had previously been a movie theater and a fitness center. Here we learn more about how to grow new ministry, how to cope with adversity through two fires, and how to view a facility as a ministry tool.
|
2000/2007/2010 Finally, the Chapel moves into a facility, designed for ministry, that it owns, which leads to rapid growth and ever-expanding ministries. In 2007, extra parking is added along with modular classrooms and planning begins for Phase 2 of construction. In 2010, Phase 2 is completed with more classroom space, the cafe/kitchen and a gymnasium.

Where Are We Now?
As this graphic shows, much of our current building has been paid for but we still have a fair way to go. During the first four years of Beyond These Walls, $665K was pledged and we met and exceeded our pledged amount with over $1.3M+ in giving. We praise God for His wonderful provision that enabled us to pay for a significant portion of our facilities – even during a global pandemic!
We are hoping and praying that God will enable us to make another major advance in paying the building loan off over these next twelve months. One reason to see it paid for sooner rather than later is because it would mean paying less in interest. During the Beyond These Walls campaign we’ve been able to pay, on average, $18K in extra principal payments each month which has enabled us to pay down the principal by $1.32M (since April 2019). If we can continue this trend, we can pay off the loan ten years early (by 2027) saving more than $500K in interest.

What Can You Do?
We are asking everyone who calls PCC their church home to consider partnering with us in our Beyond These Walls journey. It’s our conviction that we embark on this journey together. The first and most important thing you can do is join us in prayer. In Psalm 127:1 the psalmist declares, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” We do not want to move forward with this campaign in vain. We want to pay for and do ministry in this building for God’s glory and trusting in God’s power. So please join us in committing to pray regularly for God to use Beyond These Walls for His glory and our good.
Secondly, we are asking you to join us in giving. On Sunday, March 26, 2023 during our Commitment Sunday we will invite you to make a one-year pledge to help us pay off what is left of our building loan. To help you prepare for this we encourage you to consider taking a few steps.

Next Steps
Step 1: Look around you and take a moment to observe all the ways in which God is at work in this church. Then, give God thanks for this building and how He’s using it to help make those things happen.
Step 2: Realize what God says about you and money. The love of money is one of the greatest spiritual dangers we face as American Christians today. And yet, money is also a great gift from God that we can use to invest in His kingdom. To find out more about what God says about you and money consider picking up one of the following resources available for purchase at the PCC bookshelf: The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn, Redeeming Money by Paul Tripp or Money Counts by Graham Beynon.
Step 3: Combine faith with figures. Take some time to analyze what God has given you. What financial resources and possessions of value has He entrusted to your care? Take note of what you have and then pray about what God would have you commit to give. The Giver’s ABCs Resource is a tool that you can use to help you add faith to your figures. If married, do this with your spouse. God intends this commitment to enrich your relationship. Talking and praying over this decision can bring you closer than you might have thought. If you’re single, bring a friend in on the discussion. Be sure to talk about your heart and your hopes as well as your dollars.

Beyond These Walls FAQs
Why should I/we fill out and sign a Faith Promise Card?
It has proven helpful to many to make and share a commitment. The air of materialism we breathe can kill a nebulous good intent. Like any good discipline, one needs to avoid legalism and a “pay the bill” mentality. But the joy of making and sticking to a commitment, watching the Lord provide and rejoicing when He does can be worth it. Some of us find it hard to make a pledge because we just don’t know what income we’ll have and when. We understand that and rejoice whenever anyone gives anything at any time!
Pledged giving also allows us to make plans for paying extra principal on the mortgage. With pledges we are able to come up with an educated guess of what will come in on average per month and make a commitment to pay extra principal right away. These extra principal payments enable us to save thousands in interest costs and pay off the loan earlier than expected. It is the same thing that happens when someone pays extra towards their mortgage. Non-pledged giving doesn’t give us this option. We have to wait for several months to find trends that look reliable before we can adjust our commitment, hoping the giving will remain consistent.
How do we fill out the Faith Promise Card?
Please enter your total Faith Promise amount over a one year period in the first blank. Under ‘Giving Frequency’ & ‘Giving Amount Per Frequency’, please indicate how you plan to give your Faith Promise amount over the next year. For example, if you plan to give $1,200 total and you plan to do that by giving $100 per month, check ‘Monthly’ under ‘Giving Frequency’ and write ‘$100 per month’ under ‘Giving Amount Per Frequency’. If, for example, you plan to give $2,200 but want to give a one time donation of $1,000 up front plus $100 per month, check ‘Monthly’ & ‘One-Time’ under ‘Giving Frequency’ and write ‘$100 per month’ AND ‘$1,000 in a one time gift’ under ‘Giving Amount Per Frequency’. Use the blank lines under ‘Donation of other assets’ to describe any donations (e.g. property, stock, etc.) you plan to make to the campaign. If you have other ideas or comments on making a Faith Promise to the campaign, please use the space under ‘Other / Comments’. On the back of the card please indicate any ways that we can contact you about other types of gifts to the campaign if applicable. Finally, please fill out your contact information and sign the Faith Promise Card. An online Faith Promise Card is also available HERE.
How can I donate non-cash gifts?
On the card please check the box requesting a committee member to call regarding non-cash gifts. A committee member who is well versed in non-cash giving will be happy to discuss the matter with you. Visit our giving page to begin learning about ways to give.
How will the ministries of PCC maintain funding during the campaign period?
It is critical that our sacrificial Faith Promises are made above and beyond our regular giving to Local & Global Ministry. It is important that all ministries remain fully funded during the campaign. By God’s grace this has been our experience! Campaign funds will remain in a designated fund separate from the regular Local Ministry account. You may use a single check to remit your Local & Global Ministry and Beyond These Walls gifts; simply note the designated amounts on the white giving envelope.
Can I make an estate gift to the Chapel?
On the back of the card please indicate that you intend to make an estate gift to the Chapel by checking the appropriate box. Also indicate what type of estate gift you will make. If you know you would like to make an estate gift but need some help determining how to go about estate giving, please check the box requesting a call from a planned giving adviser.
Is it important that we sign the Faith Promise Card?
Yes, it is important that we fill out the information requested completely and sign the cards to indicate that it is a good faith intention on the part of each congregant. Faith Promises are not legally enforceable as a pledge but the signatures add credibility when our financial team is able to communicate to the lending institutions that the pledges are signed.
Who will have access to the Faith Promise Cards and will they remain confidential?
This commitment is between you and God, and will remain anonymous to all but the Director of Administration and the financial administration team. We ask that you either place the card in the drop boxes on Commitment Sunday on March 26, 2023, drop it by our financial office anytime, or simply drop it in the mail. You can also fill out the Faith Promise Card online.
What exactly will my money go towards?
The elimination of our $1.3 million debt by providing for both the monthly interest and principal payment. As giving allows, we will also make additional principal payments above the required mortgage payments to pay down the debt as quickly as we can. As soon as our debt is paid off, we will be freed up to continue expanding ministry beyond these walls in new ways.
