PCC's Women of the Word

Simple Discipleship

Can discipleship be simple? Yes! There’s been a lot of talk about discipleship lately at PCC, and I want to provide you with a simple “roadmap“ to have discipleship meetings with someone. Simple can be defined as “easily understood or done“ and “uncomplicated in form”. I know I am more likely to do something If I feel competent and confident in it, and simple is best. Also, something that is simple will more likely be reproduced by other people, therefore helping disciples to make other disciples. So, here is the roadmap. I didn’t create it; just the messenger.

Break the discipleship meeting into 3/3s in this order:
  • Look back
  • Look up
  • Look forward

Look back:
  • Ask the person what was their high and a low since you last saw them? And then share your own.
  • Provide loving, grace-filled accountability for their following and fishing since you last met. (I’ll explain more about that in the looking forward section).
  • Pray together for what you shared and your time together.

Look up:
  • Study something from scripture together.
  • You can use a very simple “SOS“ method: what does it SAY, how do I OBEY, and who can I SHARE it with.
  • Or ask: what does it say about God? People? Is there a sin to avoid or promise in the scripture? Is there an example or command?

Look ahead:
  • Try and  retell what you read to each other or practice a scripture memory verse from what you read.
  • Ask the Holy Spirit what he wants you to do based on what you studied.  In the the books of Matthew and Mark, Jesus says to come follow him and he will make you fishers of men. So ask the Holy Spirit how he wants you to follow until you meet again. For example, how much/what scripture will you study, scheduled pray time, etc. Then ask how he wants you to fish for people. Who can you share your faith with? Who can you pray for out loud  with? Who can you share the Gospel with?

I truly hope this helps you to disciple others. This simple, biblical, and reproducible method has created many disciples around the world. I’d love to encourage you in this and pray for you and your disciples; please email me at marydavidnyc@hotmail.com to connect.
